A Conversation with Anna Winger of "Unorthodox"

7/1/2020

For Berlin-based American writer-producer Anna Winger, creating the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox offered a unique opportunity to tell a Jewish story in Germany. The show, which premiered March 26 on Netflix, follows a young woman who leaves her husband and her ultra-Orthodox Satmar community in Williamsburg, NY, for a new life in Berlin.
This past Sunday morning, Ms. Winger joined the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana (live from Berlin via Zoom) for an exclusive conversation moderated by Carol Culberg. Over 70 participants tuned in for this exciting program!
The recording is now available to watch on Federation's YouTube channel:
Ms. Winger was raised by anthropologists in Massachusetts and in Mexico, and educated at Columbia University. She co-created and co-wrote the four-episode Netflix series along with documentarian Alexa Karolinski, and also served as executive producer. She is also the founder of Studio Airlift, a production company based in Berlin. She lives in Berlin with her family.
Carol Culberg is a board member and past president of the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana. She chairs Federation's Education committee. In 2019, Carol launched Federation's popular evening book club, which meets every 6 weeks; the most recent discussion selection (also via Zoom) was Deborah Feldman's 2012 memoir Unorthodox, which inspired the Netflix series.

Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel
(2018; 86 minutes)

The David-and-Goliath story of Israel's national baseball team as it competes for the first time in the World Baseball Classic. After years of crushing defeats, Israel finally ranks among the world’s best in 2017. Its roster includes many Jewish-American major leaguers, most with a tenuous relationship to Judaism, barely any ever having set foot in Israel. Their odyssey takes them from the Holy Land, where they are hailed as modern-day Maccabees, to the tournament in South Korea where they must debunk their reputations as has-beens and wannabes. The connection to Israel that the players forge pushes them to unexpected heights as they represent the country on the world stage.

JCY Day Camp Goes Virtual for 2020

5/19/2020

Our JCY Day Camp has always held the highest standards for the safety and welfare of its campers. The Jewish Federation’s Board of Directors and staff have spent weeks gathering information about the impact of COVID-19 in order to ensure we could make the best decision for our JCY family.

It is with great sadness that we share, out of the utmost concern for the well-being of our campers, staff members and their respective families, we have made the very difficult decision to cancel in-person JCY Camp for the summer of 2020. All registration fees will be refunded over the next 3-4 weeks.
Picture
We have always made our decisions based on what is best for our children and families, and this is no different. In this instance, we are unable to guarantee camper safety. The well-being of everyone is just too important to move forward with camp.
We are very excited to share that we have made the decision to offer a virtual JCY experience free to our community this summer. We are putting together many engaging and fun activities which will be offered via the "JCY Day Camp" Facebook page beginning June 15, 2020. While virtual camp activities will never replace the real JCY experience, we are thankful for the opportunity to connect with you and your children during this uncertain time.

It is our hope that social distancing requirements will be such that we will be able to plan one or more special get-togethers during the summer. We are also planning on hosting a few Zoom meetings to play games and see each other.

We hope you and your family members are safe and well, and that your camper(s) will be joining us this summer for JCY's “The Virtual” Summer of Peace, Love, and good old-fashioned JCY fun. We know it is not the same as being together, but here at JCY, we're determined to make the best of it. We love you. We miss you. We can’t wait to see you soon.

Peace, Love, and JCY!

#GivingTuesdayNow, A Global Day of Giving and Unity

4/30/2020

In this time of uncertainty, there's a fundamental truth that gives us hope: that together we can do extraordinary things. Over the past few weeks and months, the entire world has been coming together to stand up, help out, give back and heal. Whether through donations to community organizations, celebrating doctors and nurses at shift changes, or reaching out to a neighbor to help with groceries, generosity has been helping the entire world get through this global pandemic. Together.

#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled #GivingTuesday on December 1, 2020  – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world.

On May 5, the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana will be participating in #GivingTuesdayNow. Our Federation is answering the call to assist our most vulnerable community members and help bring our Jewish community together. We have expanded our roster of support services during this time:
  • Our longstanding Adult Friendship Club has been reinvented as a home delivery meal program. We delivered over 400 kosher meals in March and April, including over 150 Seder-to-Go meals to enhance this very challenging Passover for our seniors and families.
  • Our food pantry has expanded its hours by 50% and moved to contact-free curbside distribution to facilitate the health and safety of our volunteers, staff, and clients. We are continuing to field requests for financial assistance.
  • We are curating recommended resources on our website for virtual Jewish community and ongoing learning. Visit federationonline.org/virtual to enjoy some of our favorite selections.
  • K'Ton Ton Early Childhood educators are supporting families and children with a focus on a curriculum of love, care, kindness, and relationships. Teachers and staff are actively engaged with children through daily virtual class times and a weekly Shabbat celebration, videos of activity ideas and stories, mailing letters and cards, and an active Facebook group for families to share and interact. They have had drive-by birthday and teacher parades, and assembled over 40 "play-at-home" kits to deliver to families.
But we can’t do this without the support of our community members. Join the movement on May 5, 2020!
  • Bookmark federationonline.org/donate today, and if you are able to give, please give.
  • Visit now.givingtuesday.org to learn about other ways you can participate in the #GivingTuesdayNow movement.
  • Whatever your circumstances, we are here for you. Please call the Federation office at (219) 301-0960 for any additional assistance we can offer you during this time.

Yom HaShoah Message from Consul General Aviv Ezra

4/20/2020

Picture
Mr. Aviv Ezra currently serves as the Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, based in Chicago. He is the official representative of the state of Israel in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. He distributed this message on Monday, April 20, 2020 in honor of Yom HaShoah.
Just a few weeks ago as my family and I hosted Passover Seder via zoom, we read how “in each generation” there are those who seek to destroy the Jews as a people.

This was certainly true in ancient times. Later, in the middle Ages, this was also the case. And the most recent attempt to exterminate us—and the most systematic and nearly successful onslaught —occurred not thousands or even hundreds of years ago -- but rather in the generation of our parents and grandparents.

We must ask ourselves the question, how did this happen? A combination of 3 factors brought this unparalleled and unbelievable disaster to our people. First, the ungraspable hatred of Jews. Second, the apathy of the world in the face of horrors. And third our people’s terrible weakness in exile

Has the hatred disappeared? No it has not. Even as we fight this horrific coronavirus pandemic, anti-Semitism is still alive and well. And with thousands of years of anti-Semitism, it would be naive to think it will disappear in the foreseeable future.

And second, as to the world’s apathy, has anything changed in this regard? Here too, we must admit that the answer is no, nothing has changed. While no tragedy on the scale of the holocaust has occurred since World War II, still there are many cases we can look to in which the world stood by and did nothing to prevent the destruction of peoples or mass murder.

So it is clear that both the hatred of Jews and the apathy of the world remain. This horrible reality leads us to conclude that the we, the Jewish people, must be capable of defending ourselves by ourselves.

This brings me to the third point- our people’s terrible weakness in exile. This is the factor that has in fact changed. The difference today is that Israel exists as a safe haven for the Jewish people. Israel exists with the capability to defend ourselves, the Jewish people, by ourselves. Israel exists as a strong and resilient state and Israel exists as a nation that will not be apathetic in the face of tragedy.

The Holocaust Remembrance Day commands us to remember our unspeakable losses, but on this day, we must not forget our innumerable strengths. For us, never again does not mean that we believe Jews might never find themselves in a reoccurrence of hatred and anti-Semitism, rather for us the statement “never again” means never again being defenseless and never again being stateless.

Coronavirus Update: Adult Friendship Club

3/13/2020

As we all know, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is already becoming a public health crisis in many parts of the United States. One important component of slowing the rate of transmission is “social distancing”: avoiding close contact with other people, even before COVID-19 is known to be spreading in our community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick, which includes ALL people over the age of 60. The CDC recommends that older adults stay home as much as possible in the coming weeks to reduce their risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

Out of concern for the health and safety of our senior population, we are cancelling all AFC on-site lunches and programs at least through March 31, 2020. The Brunch & Play outing for March 18 will be postponed to July.

At the same time, we know that times of isolation and sickness are exactly when our seniors need social and nutritional support the most. Thus, the Adult Friendship Club will offer home meal delivery only to all AFC members, Mondays and Wednesdays from March 16 through March 30.
Menu:
Mon 3/16: Choice of turkey OR salami sandwich, coleslaw, chips, pickles, cookies
Wed 3/18: Beef chili, cornbread, cookies
Mon 3/23: Chicken casserole with rice & vegetables, brownies
Wed 3/25: Spaghetti & meatballs, salad, garlic bread, cake
Mon 3/30: Chicken stir-fry with rice & vegetables, cookies
Please call the office by 10am on Monday 3/16 to place your orders for delivery. You may also leave a voicemail for Rachel over the weekend. Deliveries will be made between 12-2pm each day. The cost will be $8 per delivered meal. No money will be collected at time of delivery. We will track your orders and you may bring a check or cash once AFC resumes regularly scheduled meetings.

At this time, we have no information regarding the AFC Passover Seder scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. It remains to be seen how we will proceed for April and May. Plans will be announced as they unfold, based on the developing situation.

We are here for you during this time of confusion and uncertainty. Please call the Federation office for any additional assistance we can offer you during this time. If you know someone who is immune-compromised or another senior who may need resources, please let us know how we can help.

We wish continued good health and good spirits to every one of you and our surrounding community.

Important Information Regarding the COVID-19 Coronavirus and Our Community

3/10/2020

In all circumstances, the health and safety of our community are our highest concern. There are actions which all members of our community can take to support the health and well-being of all.

The official recommendation from both the Indiana and Lake County health departments is to continue normal operations while asking our community members to take everyday preventive measures to help reduce the spread of illness.
Picture
At present, all activities are continuing normally at the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana. We do ask that everyone entering our building follow the CDC-recommended protocols we have put into place:
  • Warmly greet others verbally or with a wave or elbow bump. Avoid hugging and shaking hands.
  • Wash your hands when you enter the Federation building, before entering the Social Hall or office wing. Scrub thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and running water.
  • Use disposable tissues to catch all sneezes and coughs, and wash hands again immediately.
  • Use hand sanitizers when frequent handwashing is not possible.
  • Avoid touching your face, nose and eyes.
  • Do not share plates or cups.
  • If you are feeling ill, PLEASE REMAIN AT HOME.
In addition, please be aware that the CDC is encouraging people over the age of 60 — as well as anyone with a severe chronic medical condition such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes — to "stay at home as much as possible" to reduce their higher risk of contracting COVID-19. We want to ensure that people do not put themselves or others in harm’s way and ask that you follow the CDC Guidelines.

We will continue to keep you informed as information becomes available.

Community Engagement Conversation with SCN

2/13/2020

SCN (Secure Community Network) was established in 2004 as the first national nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to Homeland Security initiatives on behalf of the American Jewish community. Over the last few years, SCN has become a critical partner for Jewish communities across the country by offering resources for immediate assistance, information, guidance and expertise. Visit their website at securecommunitynetwork.org to subscribe to their daily briefing.
Picture
In January 2020, the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana had a productive discussion with SCN's Chicago office about our collective community’s preparedness, safety, and security in this age of rising anti-Semitism. Our first step is to convene the entire Jewish community in Northwest Indiana for a Community Engagement Conversation to be led by Michael Masters, CEO of SCN. Masters will provide important context around Jewish community security and preparedness in a time of increased anti-Semitism and attacks against houses of worship.
Picture
Prior to joining SCN, Mr. Masters served as Senior Vice President of The Soufan Group, a strategic advisory firm that assists organizations in the public and private sectors address emergent threats, and as CEO of CivicScape, an advanced analytics company that provides risk assessments to public and private sector entities. He previously served as Executive Director of the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Cook County, Illinois, and as Chief of Staff for the Chicago Police Department. A Truman and a Gates Cambridge Trust Scholar, Mr. Masters received his B.A. from the University of Michigan, MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. Certified as a peace officer and a Special Weapons and Tactics operator, Mr. Masters continues to serve his community as a part-time police officer. Mr. Masters received an officer’s commission in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Captain.
We encourage all board members, staff, and congregation members to join us for this important conversation on Monday, February 24, 3:00pm at the Federation building. Our local police departments are also invited.
