For Berlin-based American writer-producer Anna Winger, creating the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox offered a unique opportunity to tell a Jewish story in Germany. The show, which premiered March 26 on Netflix, follows a young woman who leaves her husband and her ultra-Orthodox Satmar community in Williamsburg, NY, for a new life in Berlin. This past Sunday morning, Ms. Winger joined the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana (live from Berlin via Zoom) for an exclusive conversation moderated by Carol Culberg. Over 70 participants tuned in for this exciting program! The recording is now available to watch on Federation's YouTube channel: Ms. Winger was raised by anthropologists in Massachusetts and in Mexico, and educated at Columbia University. She co-created and co-wrote the four-episode Netflix series along with documentarian Alexa Karolinski, and also served as executive producer. She is also the founder of Studio Airlift, a production company based in Berlin. She lives in Berlin with her family. Carol Culberg is a board member and past president of the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana. She chairs Federation's Education committee. In 2019, Carol launched Federation's popular evening book club, which meets every 6 weeks; the most recent discussion selection (also via Zoom) was Deborah Feldman's 2012 memoir Unorthodox, which inspired the Netflix series.

We have always made our decisions based on what is best for our children and families, and this is no different. In this instance, we are unable to guarantee camper safety. The well-being of everyone is just too important to move forward with camp.
We are very excited to share that we have made the decision to offer a virtual JCY experience free to our community this summer. We are putting together many engaging and fun activities which will be offered via the "JCY Day Camp" Facebook page beginning June 15, 2020. While virtual camp activities will never replace the real JCY experience, we are thankful for the opportunity to connect with you and your children during this uncertain time. It is our hope that social distancing requirements will be such that we will be able to plan one or more special get-togethers during the summer. We are also planning on hosting a few Zoom meetings to play games and see each other. We hope you and your family members are safe and well, and that your camper(s) will be joining us this summer for JCY's “The Virtual” Summer of Peace, Love, and good old-fashioned JCY fun. We know it is not the same as being together, but here at JCY, we're determined to make the best of it. We love you. We miss you. We can’t wait to see you soon. Peace, Love, and JCY!
THEN... To tie together our Shabbat-in-a-Box experience, the rabbis of each of our six Northwest Indiana congregations will share a short, inspirational message in a Friday afternoon pre-Shabbat Zoom gathering, May 22 at 5:15pm.
Thank you to all those who stood with us and gave what you could in this time of unprecedented need. Through your generosity, we raised over $10,420 on #GivingTuesdayNow. These funds will allow the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana to continue providing crucial support to the most vulnerable in our community during this crisis:

In this time of uncertainty, there's a fundamental truth that gives us hope: that together we can do extraordinary things. Over the past few weeks and months, the entire world has been coming together to stand up, help out, give back and heal. Whether through donations to community organizations, celebrating doctors and nurses at shift changes, or reaching out to a neighbor to help with groceries, generosity has been helping the entire world get through this global pandemic. Together.
#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled #GivingTuesday on December 1, 2020 – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19. The day is designed to drive an influx of generosity, citizen engagement, business and philanthropy activation, and support for communities and nonprofits around the world. On May 5, the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana will be participating in #GivingTuesdayNow. Our Federation is answering the call to assist our most vulnerable community members and help bring our Jewish community together. We have expanded our roster of support services during this time:
Just a few weeks ago as my family and I hosted Passover Seder via zoom, we read how “in each generation” there are those who seek to destroy the Jews as a people. As we all know, the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is already becoming a public health crisis in many parts of the United States. One important component of slowing the rate of transmission is “social distancing”: avoiding close contact with other people, even before COVID-19 is known to be spreading in our community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick, which includes ALL people over the age of 60. The CDC recommends that older adults stay home as much as possible in the coming weeks to reduce their risk of being exposed to COVID-19. Out of concern for the health and safety of our senior population, we are cancelling all AFC on-site lunches and programs at least through March 31, 2020. The Brunch & Play outing for March 18 will be postponed to July. At the same time, we know that times of isolation and sickness are exactly when our seniors need social and nutritional support the most. Thus, the Adult Friendship Club will offer home meal delivery only to all AFC members, Mondays and Wednesdays from March 16 through March 30. Menu: Mon 3/16: Choice of turkey OR salami sandwich, coleslaw, chips, pickles, cookies Wed 3/18: Beef chili, cornbread, cookies Mon 3/23: Chicken casserole with rice & vegetables, brownies Wed 3/25: Spaghetti & meatballs, salad, garlic bread, cake Mon 3/30: Chicken stir-fry with rice & vegetables, cookies Please call the office by 10am on Monday 3/16 to place your orders for delivery. You may also leave a voicemail for Rachel over the weekend. Deliveries will be made between 12-2pm each day. The cost will be $8 per delivered meal. No money will be collected at time of delivery. We will track your orders and you may bring a check or cash once AFC resumes regularly scheduled meetings.
At this time, we have no information regarding the AFC Passover Seder scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. It remains to be seen how we will proceed for April and May. Plans will be announced as they unfold, based on the developing situation. We are here for you during this time of confusion and uncertainty. Please call the Federation office for any additional assistance we can offer you during this time. If you know someone who is immune-compromised or another senior who may need resources, please let us know how we can help. We wish continued good health and good spirits to every one of you and our surrounding community.
At present, all activities are continuing normally at the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana. We do ask that everyone entering our building follow the CDC-recommended protocols we have put into place:
In addition, please be aware that the CDC is encouraging people over the age of 60 — as well as anyone with a severe chronic medical condition such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes — to "stay at home as much as possible" to reduce their higher risk of contracting COVID-19. We want to ensure that people do not put themselves or others in harm’s way and ask that you follow the CDC Guidelines. We will continue to keep you informed as information becomes available. Additional Resources:
In January 2020, the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana had a productive discussion with SCN's Chicago office about our collective community’s preparedness, safety, and security in this age of rising anti-Semitism. Our first step is to convene the entire Jewish community in Northwest Indiana for a Community Engagement Conversation to be led by Michael Masters, CEO of SCN. Masters will provide important context around Jewish community security and preparedness in a time of increased anti-Semitism and attacks against houses of worship.
We encourage all board members, staff, and congregation members to join us for this important conversation on Monday, February 24, 3:00pm at the Federation building. Our local police departments are also invited.
