Community Engagement Conversation with SCN

2/13/2020

SCN (Secure Community Network) was established in 2004 as the first national nonprofit organization exclusively dedicated to Homeland Security initiatives on behalf of the American Jewish community. Over the last few years, SCN has become a critical partner for Jewish communities across the country by offering resources for immediate assistance, information, guidance and expertise. Visit their website at securecommunitynetwork.org to subscribe to their daily briefing.

In January 2020, the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana had a productive discussion with SCN's Chicago office about our collective community’s preparedness, safety, and security in this age of rising anti-Semitism. Our first step is to convene the entire Jewish community in Northwest Indiana for a Community Engagement Conversation to be led by Michael Masters, CEO of SCN. Masters will provide important context around Jewish community security and preparedness in a time of increased anti-Semitism and attacks against houses of worship.

Prior to joining SCN, Mr. Masters served as Senior Vice President of The Soufan Group, a strategic advisory firm that assists organizations in the public and private sectors address emergent threats, and as CEO of CivicScape, an advanced analytics company that provides risk assessments to public and private sector entities. He previously served as Executive Director of the Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Cook County, Illinois, and as Chief of Staff for the Chicago Police Department. A Truman and a Gates Cambridge Trust Scholar, Mr. Masters received his B.A. from the University of Michigan, MPhil in International Relations from the University of Cambridge, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School. Certified as a peace officer and a Special Weapons and Tactics operator, Mr. Masters continues to serve his community as a part-time police officer. Mr. Masters received an officer’s commission in the United States Marine Corps, where he attained the rank of Captain.
We encourage all board members, staff, and congregation members to join us for this important conversation on Monday, February 24, 3:00pm at the Federation building. Our local police departments are also invited.
